Americans tend to forget how complex the region is, considering it primarily either the battleground for climate change or a garden for enjoyment and/or exploitation. Now producer-actor Tom Hanks and crew are coming out with a twelve-part mini-series about American soldiers fighting the Japanese called The Pacific. Yet again, though the series is likely to be a spectacular ride, the indigenous peoples living in the Pacific islands are likely to be obscured behind the fire and swagger of larger nations. How about a primer? First, the macro-view from the big states you’ll be familiar with: What is Melanesia and Polynesia?
